The first step in getting over someone is to actually get over the relationship. You have to make peace with yourself and with the other person, realizing that this was a romance that simply wasn’t meant to be. Our first instinct after a relationship breakup is to play the blame game. We start to see our ex-partner as the devil incarnate, a person that should have been much kinder, much more understanding than he or she was.
While it’s possible that your ex-lover had some flaws and treated you poorly in the relationship, dwelling on every sin committed is just not practical. Besides, there are two sides to every story. Your ex probably has probably come up with his or her own reasons on why the relationship breakup had to happen. Despite the numerous perspectives involved, one thing cannot be denied: the two of you were not ultimately compatible during your relationship.
The next reaction a person takes to a relationship breakup is usually one of self-condemnation. After realizing that it wasn’t the ex’s fault—at least not totally—a person might start to place the blame on him or herself. You start to think back on all of the things you did wrong. You start to remember situations in which you acted poorly and wish you could take them back. You may even still think about ways you could make it up to your ex-partner and start the romance again.
It is important in relationship breakups, when learning how to deal with it, to stop blaming yourself or your partner for what has happened. You have to accept the fact that due to many, many reasons (perhaps even the full moon) the relationship simply did not work out. The truth of the matter is that it’s not any one person’s fault. The relationship failed because of both your actions and the actions of your ex.
This does not mean that you have to forget about the other person. This does not mean that you have to hate that other person and spend most of your time planning revenge or at least hoping that he or she receives comeuppance. You are a bigger person than that. You have a life to live. You are capable of looking back on the relationship fondly, taking it as a learning experience, and knowing that you did everything you were capable of doing, to make it work.
There are productive ways to deal with relationship breakup. The first step is forgiving yourself for your actions and the actions of your ex. Now it is time to move on to a happier love life.
